Gage county, my county, my hometown, Beatrice, now has the highest unemployment rate in Nebraska.
The population of Beatrice is around 13,000 people. In December, the unemployment rate was at 6.1 percent and has since risen to 7.2 percent in January. The national percentage of unemployment is 7.6 percent.
Around 14,300 people lost their jobs around Nebraska in January.
One of them was my dad.
The impact of the failing economy is really hitting me home, literally, now.
My dad worked at a recycling plant in Lincoln, named Firstarfiber. He was a supervisor for this relatively new company. Luckily, this week he found a job in quality management on an assembly line in some manufacturing plant in Lincoln.
The pay is small.
The hours are long.
Ten hours to be exact.
And he just "graduated" last Friday from cardiac rehabilitation from his heart attack back in December 2008.
With no health insurance, it's hard to pay the bills and help support the family.
Without a proper diet and exercise, these next two weeks could find his heart in the same, or even worse, condition that he had originally started with.
Gage county, my county, my hometown: Beatrice.

P.S.-I recognize that there are people out there who have it worse than me and I sympathize and acknowledge them. This is just my story, yet another piece to the puzzle to our nation's growing concern with the poor economy.
